With the festive season right around the corner we thought it was only right we gathered together some of our favourite festive wedding ideas into a blog post. From beautiful winter flowers to a hearty Christmas dinner there’s so much to love about getting married in December.
Decorations
If you’re getting married in the winter, you’ll want to feel cosy inside so it’s important you pick out a venue that can be made to feel warm and welcoming. You’ll want to make the most of it being Christmas with having the freedom to decorate. Over Barn offers the perfect blank canvas to add as many or as little decorations as you like.
Welcome your guests into the reception with a huge wreath on the door. Not only will it look stunning, it’s the perfect photo backdrop. Adding a beautiful Christmas tree to your venue is a must. Decorate it according to your colour scheme, you could even go all out with personalised baubles. At the end of the party, let everyone take one home to remember your special day with. Check in with your venue, they may have a tree or other decorations up during the festive period for other events and they may be willing to leave them up for your special day.
Wrap string lights around the tree and any bannisters or pillars in your venue. Hang mistletoe in doorways for a romantic but fun touch. Tartan and faux fur are festive textures to bring into your styling, great for adding to seats.
Make the most of the beautiful flowers that are in season during the wintertime. Roses, tulips, forget-me-nots and amaryllis are just a few that we love. Combine these with holly, berries and pinecones to create beautiful Christmas flowers that can transform your venue.
Clothing
The main thing you should take into account when planning your outfit is keeping warm. There’s nothing more miserable than being chilly, especially on your wedding day. Plan in advance, pick out a luxurious faux fur shrug or a leather jacket if you’re looking for something a bit more edgy.
When you think of festive dresses, sequins immediately spring to mind. Incorporate this into your bridesmaids’ looks for the ultimate Christmas bride squad. If sequins aren’t really your thing, pick out deep emerald or red velvet dresses.
Don’t forget to provide matching Christmas PJs for you and your bridesmaids to wear as you get glammed up. Your photographer can get some amazing photos of you all matching.
The groom and groomsmen can really bring the festive theme into their outfits. Have them add a sprig of holly or wintery foliage into their buttonholes. Again, it’s important to plan around the cooler temperatures. Tweed suits add that extra warmth if you’re getting married in an old church or more rustic venue.
Food and Drink
For welcome drinks and canapés, why not emulate a German Christmas market theme? We love the idea of offering your guests mulled wine and hot chocolate paired with mini pretzels and hot dogs. If warm drinks don’t appeal, serving prosecco with cranberry syrup and garnishing with holly really gives off that festive vibe.
For the main meal, a traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings is the obvious option. Don’t forget the pigs in blankets and cranberry sauce! Finish up with a yule log or Christmas pudding for the traditionalists in the group. Bailey’s coffee paired with mince pies is another sweet way to conclude the meal.
Entertainment
Make an agreement with your DJ beforehand regarding Christmas music. Let them know your favourites or whether you want them avoided completely.
If you have lots of children attending, there’s nothing more exciting than a visit from Santa himself. Provide him with gifts to give out to each little one, he could even run some festive games to help keep them entertained.
Festive Favours
Have a bit of fun with the favours, wrapping up small presents and finishing with bows can make luxurious gifts for your guests. Christmas crackers are another idea for favours, personalise them if you have time or just pick some pre-made ones that match your styling. Add a label onto each as placeholders or use off cuts of Christmas tree with a tag to let your guests know where they’re sitting.
